More Stud Poker Types

Read rules and descriptions of four additional stud poker types: Auction, Cowpie, Number Nine, Dr Pepper and Draft.

Dr Pepper

There was a Dr Pepper advertisement popular in 1920s that said: Drink a Bite to Eat at 10, 2 and 4 oclock. Dr Pepper is a stud poker game where 10s, 2s and 4s are wild.

Number Nine

Number Nine is a seven-card stud, where 9 is a wild number. Not only 9s themselves are wild, but also any two card that make 9 points in sum can be played as one wild card if the player decides so. If he does not, the cards play according to their face value. Aces are count as 1 and can form a wild card together with an 8. In some variations, 9s themselves are not wild, but only combinations of two cards.

Draft

Draft (also called Socialist poker) is a variant of seven-card stud, in which in three middle rounds where upcard are dealt, the cards are not dealt usually, but placed in the middle of the table. A player with the worst upcard hand is the first to select which card he wants to take, a player with the second worst hand is the second and so on until the player with the best hand who takes the remaining card. Except these three draft rounds, the rest of the game is played as normal seven-card stud.

Auction

Auction is similar to Draft poker, but in the beginning of upcard rounds, only one card is dealt to the middle of the table and players bid on it. The player who bids the highest, buys the card, placing the money into the pot, and then can either take the card to himself, or force any other player to take it. Only the first card of each round is traded. The rest of the cards to the rest of the players are dealt randomly, as in normal seven-card stud.

Cowpie Poker

Cowpie is a pun on Pai Gow, and it actually is a mix of seven-card stud and Pai Gow poker. Cards are bettings are managed exactly like in seven-card stud, but in the end, the seven-card hand each player has is played as in Pai Gow, viz. it is split to a five-card and a two-card hand. The five-card hand must rank higher than the two-card hand and must contain at least one downcard. There is one more betting round after the split and before the showdown. Unlike Pai Gow, the game is not played against the house, so the pot is equally divided between the highest two-card hand and the highest five-card hand owners.
