How to Behave While Playing Poker

Learn how to behave while playing poker at one of the many land casinos and poker rooms you might play at.

For those playing poker at one of the many land casinos, these poker tips will prove priceless and you will end up with a lot MORE POKER MONEY.

  1. Poker Acting:
When you see players acting nonchalant as if they aren't in the game, it's a sign that they have very strong cards and vice versa. In simple words, if a poker player acts like he has strong cards, this might mean that he has weak cards. If a poker player acts like he has weak cards or acts uninterested, this might prove that instead he has very strong cards.
  2. Anxiety:
You will inevitably suffer from anxiety when you find yourself in tight situations whether at an online casino or at a land casino. This is termed the "Fight or Flight" stimulus response in psychology. It is supposed to go back to the days when we were cavemen/cave women. Anxiety causes actual physical changes such as trembling hands, expanding of the chest, voice changes, flexing of muscles, eye pupil dilation, palpitating heart rate and dry throat. Watch out for these characteristics while gambling. If someone seems to be anxious this should tell you that he is getting ready to confront other poker players. Likewise, if he looks too relaxed, it should tell you that he means to fold.
  3. Frequently looking at his money:
Again, relating to the eyes. It is common for players to quickly glance at their chips if they connect with the board after a Flop for example. This may be a subconscious reaction, but the player is already planning his attack.
  4. Observe the eyes:
Eyes rarely lie. Try and read your poker opponents' cards by reading the jubilance or fear in their eyes. You will find quite a few players wearing sunglasses even inside the casino. Now you know why they do this. More Tips:
    • Poker players can't help but stare at big hole cards, so if one is staring a bit longer than usual you've got him.
    • Poker players, who are looking to steal the pot, may look left to see if those who haven't acted have quickly glanced at their cards and are likely to fold.
    • Poker players may try to question you about your hand. Don't we all know that rarely can we lie while looking directly into someone else's eyes?
  5. Facial Expression:
Just like the eyes, whether you want to or not your face usually shows jubilee or disappointment. Some poker players try to avoid displaying their face by either wearing hats or by looking down. What could your face reveal?
    • nervousness (a weak hand)
    • repetitive characteristics
    • obvious unhappiness in your face when your hand is weak
    • show of confidence when your hand is strong
  6. Taking a Peek Again and Again:
You might observe some poker players frequently taking another look at their hole cards when, for example, the board is showing a potential 3 card flush draw. This is an easy give-away that this player is checking if his cards make up any sequence. Now is the time to watch his face very carefully.
  7. Patterns of Wagering:
Check out how your poker opponents are playing. Usually, they all play according to a set pattern. Learn it and you will be able to read their cards. This is especially important when gambling at online casinos.
  8. Sitting Style / Demeanor:
Observe the way that your fellow poker players sit and behave and you might notice changes according to the cards they have. For instance, some might lean forward when they have weak cards and lean back when they have strong cards. The keyword to all this is observing your fellow players.
  9. Tidiness:
Look at how your fellow poker players arrange their money or chips. Usually, one who is tight and conservative in poker will organize his things very neatly. Likewise, the aggressive poker players will be untidy.

As you will have noticed, the basic strategy of playing at land casinos is looking carefully at your poker opponents. Remember that the goal isn't to get a high hand but to beat your fellow poker players. Some of the above strategy can come in handy in other casino games such as blackjack, craps and roulette as well.
